„Way of colour“

Mit der Ausstellung „Way of colour“ des in Köln lebenden und arbeitenden Künstlers CHRISTOPH GESING taucht das MUWA für nahezu ein halbes Jahr ganz in das Thema der Farbe ein. Der Fluss der Farbe, Farbwirkung und Farbwirklichkeit sind die zentralen Elemente der Ausstellung im Hauptraum. Mit dem Ausstellungstitel „Way of colour“ bezieht der Künstler sich auf das Fließen der Farbe, den Weg, den die Farbe über den Untergrund nimmt und gleichermaßen auf die spezielle Weise des Farbauftrags.

CHRISTOPH GESING zeigt Arbeiten aus drei verschiedenen Werkgruppen. Allen gemein ist eine äußerst reduzierte, minimalistische Komposition, die er in unterschiedlichen Formaten wiederholt und die dem Fluss der Farben und ihrer Wirkung eine maximale Entfaltung ermöglicht. 

Für die 2009 begonnene Serie der “Duochrome“ teilt er jede Arbeit in zwei gleich große Farbfelder, getrennt durch eine horizontale Mittellinie. Nach dem monochromen Farbauftrag über das gesamte Blatt wird die zweite, verdünnte Farbe ausgehend von der Mittellinie über eine Hälfte aufgeschüttet und durch vorsichtiges Bewegen des Blattes verteilt. Dieser physische Prozess erfordert Konzentration und rasches Arbeiten. Durch dieses spezifische, nicht gänzlich steuerbare Aufbringen von Farbe entstehen sowohl verdichtete als auch stärker durchscheinende Areale – Ergebnisse, die für den Künstler immer wieder Überraschungen bergen. 

Die ebenfalls zweifarbigen Arbeiten der “Canals“-Werkgruppe zeigen kompositorisch einen vertikalen, zum Teil zentral verlaufenden Farbstreifen. Dieser „Zwischenraum“ (GESING) in der Farbe des Grundtons teilt die hochformatigen Werke in zwei Felder der gleichen Farbe. Der lasierende Auftrag mittels Aufschütten der verdünnten zweiten Farbe erfolgt hier in zwei Richtungen, ausgehend von der vertikalen Linie, und erzeugt auch hier opake und lasierende Bereiche. 

In der dritten Werkgruppe, den „Cases“ verbindet CHRISTOPH GESING eine bemalte Aluplatte und eine bemalte Plexiglasscheibe mit einem Rahmen, der einen Abstand zwischen beiden Flächen schafft. Durch den sich verändernden Lichteinfall und den wechselnden Standpunkt des Betrachtens entstehen jeweils neue Farbnuancen dieser Schichtung zweier monochromer Farbflächen. 

Mit der Installation der Arbeiten im Ausstellungsraum erzeugt GESING eine Erweiterung farbiger Nuancen und einen ganz besonderen Rhythmus in der Zusammenschau mehrerer Arbeiten. Jede neue Präsentation von „Duochromen“ ermöglicht eine individuelle Auswahl der Reihenfolge und Zusammenstellung der Farbflächen. Mit konsequent gleichem Abstand voneinander entfalten die einzelnen Arbeiten eine eigene Wirkung durch die Interaktion mit den Farben des Nachbarbildes. 

CHRISTOPH GESING verbirgt nichts in seinen Arbeiten. Die Komposition und der Arbeitsprozess sind offengelegt und nachvollziehbar. Diese Einsichten sind dem sich eröffnenden visuellen und gedanklichen Spannungsfeld von Farbbegegnungen keineswegs abträglich, vielmehr schafft diese Klarheit eine Fokussierung auf das Wesentliche, auf die Farbe und ihre vielfältigen Wirkungsmöglichkeiten.

„Way of colour“

With the exhibition ‘Way of colour’ by the Cologne based artist CHRISTOPH GESING, MUWA is immersing completely in the theme of colour for almost half a year. The flow of colour, the effect and the reality of colour are the central elements of the exhibition in the main room. With the exhibition title ‘Way of colour‘, the artist refers to the flow of colour, the path the colour takes across the surface and also to the special way the paint is applied. 

CHRISTOPH GESING is showing works from three different groups of work. What they all have in common is an extremely reduced, minimalist composition, which he repeats in different formats and which allows the flow of colours and their effects to unfold to the fullest. 

For the ‘Duochrome‘ series, which he began in 2009, he divides each work into two colour fields of equal size, separated by a horizontal centre line. After applying the monochrome colour over the entire sheet, the second, diluted colour is poured over one half, starting from the centre line, and distributed by carefully moving the sheet. This physical process requires concentration and quick work. This specific, not entirely controllable application of colour creates both dense and more translucent areas - results that repeatedly offer the artist unexpected outcomes. 

The works of the, also two-coloured ‘Canals‘ group show a vertical, partly central strip of colour. This ‘intermediate space‘ (GESING) in the colour of the base tone divides the portrait-format works into two fields of the same colour. The glazing application by pouring the diluted second colour takes place in two directions, starting from the vertical line, once again producing both opaque and translucent areas. 

In the third group of works, the ‘Cases‘, CHRISTOPH GESING combines a painted aluminium panel and a painted plexiglass sheet within a frame that creates a gap between the two surfaces. The changing incidence of light and shifting vantage points of the viewer generate new colour nuances in the layering of these two monochrome colour fields. 

By installing the works in the exhibition space, GESING creates an extension of colour nuances and a distinctive rhythm through the juxtaposition of multiple works. Each new presentation of ‚Duochromes‘ allows for an individual selection of the order and composition of the colour surfaces. Positioned at consistent distance from each other, the individual works develop their own effect through the interaction with the colours of the neighbouring piece. 

CHRISTOPH GESING hides nothing in his works. The composition and the working process are transparent and comprehensible. These insights do not diminish the visual and intellectual tension arising from the encounter with colour; on the contrary, this clarity creates a focus on the essentials, on colour and its varied possible effects.
